Ever hear of HAVIDOL? About a year ago, an artist decided to mess with our minds by putting up this satiric page and an exhibition in New York. They both featured a campaign for fake drugs to treat a made up illness. It caused – and is still causing – a bit of a stir as people think it’s real.

It was made by Justine Cooper, and the drug pronounced “have it all” (havidol), is supposed to cure Dysphonic Social Attention Consumption Deficit Anxiety Disorder (DSACDAD).

People walked into the gallery and thought it was real, and the webpage proved to be an instant hit with more than 5000 hits after only a few days – now close to a million.

What do you think, would you have been fooled by it? Can you identify with the illness? I know that the artist here never intended to fool people the way she ended up to – she just wanted to comment on how American advertisement is– but don’t you think something as simple as this kind of opens your eyes?

The Internet is a weird place. You should think we all know by now that we just can’t trust everything out there, but quite recent surveys shows that “as long as the page looks trustworthy”, people believe most of what they read and see. And that scares me. So with this page, I would like to raise the issue, and also show exactly how easy it is, by doing it myself and showing to other peoples experiments.
